[edit] Appearance

The Tanooki Mario form would first appear in Super Mario Bros. 3, after obtaining the Tanooki Suit. While in this form, they will look like other Tanookis and will be able to turn into a statue, also known as Statue Mario or Statue Luigi. This form can be used by pressing B and down on the direction pad at the same time. They are invincible while in this form and makes it an improved version of Raccoon Mario.

Mario or Luigi cannot be hurt in the Statue form, and if they use it while in the air, they can slam down like a Thwomp. It will destroy certain enemies and activate switches. It will defeat all Goombas and enemies with throwable shells. It will stomp usually unstompable enemies like Piranha Plants, Piranhacus Giganticus, Venus Fire Traps, Spiny Eggs, Thwomps, Podoboos, Fire Snakes, and Chain Chomps. It is also the only way to defeat Roto-Discs and Rocket Engine flames. If Statue Mario is used in water, it will sink rapidly and even go against any upward currents coming from pipes. It will allow him to defeat the Lava Lotuses, Bloopers, and other fish enemies. Boss Bass is the only enemy that it cannot defeat and it's the only enemy that can hurt him in the form. In Super Mario All-Stars, Tweester can turn Statue Mario back into Tanooki Mario.

Tanooki Mario is appears in Super Mario 3D Land as the main item of the game. During events of the game, Mario can become Tanooki Mario using the Super Leaf(Raccoon Mario and Tanooki Suit will not appear in the game). Mario will be able to spin and use his tail to defeat enemies and destroy blocks. He can glide by shaking his tail and slowly descending. Tanooki Mario is not able to fly in Super Mario 3D Land. Statue Mario will return but only used by Tanooki Mario when using a red scarf.

Tanooki Mario also appears in Mario Tennis Open as a suit for the Mii character. The player can unlock this costume after turning 15 characters into star characters. A Tanooki Mario Tennis Racket can also be purchased for 1,550 coins.
