Super Mario 64 DS is a 2004 remake of the 1996 Nintendo 64 game Super Mario 64, featuring updated graphics, more playable characters, more stars, more levels, and even minigames. It is the first Mario game to be released on the Nintendo DS and was also released the same day as the original Nintendo DS.

[edit] Background

The landscape and the characters all look familiar. This is the opening castle area of Super Mario 64, only with a few DS twists thrown in. Up to four players can link up using the wireless capabilities. Players move some familiar characters, them being Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, (Each player having a different palette) and Wario, around the 3-D landscape, exploring and looking for stars. While the top screen shows the player's character position, the touch screen provides an overall map of the area. Touch a spot on he screen to pop the camera over to another players position, or to take a close up look at the castle.

[edit] Gameplay

  • Each of the four main characters has multiple jumping moves that cover great horizontal and vertical distances. Each has certain unique moves: Yoshi can eat enemies and turn them into eggs that he can throw, and flutter jump, but he cannot grab enemies, punch, nor kick; Mario can punch, kick, and wall-jump to great heights; super-strong Wario can break certain blocks that others can't, but is the slowest and has the lowest jump; and Luigi can scuttle jump incredibly high, punch, run on water, and glide and is the fastest in running and swimming. Power Flowers give each character even cooler powers, like invisibility, fire breath or the power to float through the air.

[edit] Features

  • Play as Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, and even Wario. You'll need to use each one's unique abilities to find all 150 Power Stars hidden in the castle and grounds.
  • Play through Adventure mode and try your stylus-wielding hand (or use your finger) at tons of new touch-sensitive mini-games.
  • Battle up to three friends in Wireless Versus Mode, in which you can play with only one Super Mario 64 DS game card.
