Mario, The Legendary Plumber.
|Role||Main protagonist, playable character|
|Jobs||Plumber, carpenter, doctor|
|First Appearance||Donkey Kong|
|Latest Appearance||Super Mario Odyssey|
Mario was designed by Shigeru Miyamoto, who had joined Nintendo as an artist. In Super Mario 64, he was voiced by Charles Martinet, who is still his voice actor to this day (along with Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, and Baby Mario and Luigi).
Mario wears a red shirt and blue overalls, which have yellow buttons, and brown shoes and white gloves. One of his most recognizable characteristics is his red hat, which has an "M" on it. He has brown hair, brown sideburns, and a black moustache. An oddity of Mario's newer design is that his moustache is differently colored than his hair. In older Mario games, Mario had red overalls and a blue shirt. When Miyamoto designed Mario, he gave him all of his characteristics because of technical limitations. For example, he was given a hat to avoid having to draw eyebrows and hair, as well as to not have to animate hair, overalls and a blue shirt so they'd contrast with each other and the background, and a moustache and a big nose to avoid having to animate a mouth, as well as to make his small-sized sprite seem human.

Mario would return in New Super Mario Bros. 2 as the main protagonist. This game would see the return of Raccooon Mario, as well as the introduction of Gold Mario. This form allows Mario to throw fireballs that will transform objects like blocks, into coins that he is able to collect. The White Raccoon Mario would also be introduced. It can be used after the Assist Blocks block up and when hit, a Invincibility Leaf will pop out. While in the form, Mario will be invincible and has all the abilities of a Raccoon Mario.
The events of this game would see Mario and Luigi visiting Princess Peach at her castle. The Mario Bros. are seen leaving the castle in raccoon forms, while Peach waves them off as they collect coins in the sky. When they land, the Koopalings would appear and slam into the ground with the Koopa Klown Car. This would cause the Mario Bros. to lose their raccoon powers as the Koopalings kidnap Princess Peach and they need to give chase. They would venture through six worlds, secret worlds, fight off Reznors, the Koopalings, and collect coins. When the Mario Bros. face off against Bowser at the end, they will drop Bowser by hitting a switch.
There would be another mode in the game called Coin Rush. In this mode, Mario will need to collect as many coins as possible in three random courses with a given time limit. He cannot be hit once and he can extend time by hitting the + Clocks that are found in the courses. Mario can collect coins by collecting power-ups, defeating enemies and getting on the top of the flagpole.
Mario would have to defend the Mushroom Kingdom once more from the clutches of Bowser and his soldiers in New Super Mario Bros. U. Alongside his brother Luigi, Blue Toad and Yellow Toad, as well as the Miis, Mario will set out to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser. After Bowser kidnaps Peach, Mario and company crash into a tree that releases the Super Acorns that allow him to transform into Flying Squirrel Mario. He is able to glide and cling to walls while in this form. There is also a upgraded P-Acorn that will allow him to fly indefinitely.
Mario can also discover the Baby Yoshis that will aid him by providing him light, emitting bubbles, and as well as floating. He will encounter new and old enemies along his journey in order to save Princess Peach. He will travel to a Koopaling's airship, defeat the Koopaling while Bowser modifies Peaches Castle to his own tastes. Finally when Mario arrives, he will face off against Bowser, defeat him and rescue the Princess.
