Hammers from Paper Mario.

The Hammer is an item that is used as a weapon in the Mario series. It would make its first appearance in Donkey Kong, where it would smash Barrels and enemies. They would also be the weapon of choice for the Hammer Bros.. During the Paper Mario Series, they would be the counterpart of the Jump attacks. When some enemies are unaffected by the Jump Attack, the Hammer will do the trick.

[edit] Game History

[edit] Paper Mario Series

The player can obtain a Super Hammer and Ultra Hammer in Paper Mario and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door as Mario progresses through the game. He can use the Hammer outside of battle to knock items out of the tree. The Hammer is also the only way to defeat certain enemies, while Jump can only defeat other items.

Outside of battle, it can be used to break certain Yellow Blocks. Depending on what hammer Mario has, it will depend on what he can break. If he just has the regular hammer, small yellow blocks can be broken, big yellow blocks by the Super Hammer, and stone blocks by the Ultra Hammer. The Spin Hammer would be a move in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door that can destroy the bigger blocks.

In Paper Mario, the Hammer is obtained after finding it in a bush in Goomba Village. Mario would be able to test it out on Jr. Troopa. In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, it would be the default weapon and downgraded into the original wooden hammer.

The Hammer would not be present in Super Paper Mario, as it the Pixl Cudge, would be used as a Hammer for attacks.

[edit] Mario & Luigi Series

The Hammer would appear throughout the Mario & Luigi Series. It would be first used in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga by the Mario Bros. It would also appear in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. The move would not be used like the Paper Mario series and the hammer upgrades do not affect in-battle damage and attack power.

The Hammers would be crafted by the Hammerhead Bros. in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. They would be made from the Hoohoo Blocks. Hammers can smash rocks that are in the Mario Bros. path, defeat enemies and hit special buttons or switches. If the player uses the hammer on an enemy on the overworld, then it will stun the enemy party at the beginning of the battle. The Hammer can be upgraded to a Super Hammer and the Ultimate Hammer through out the game. The Mario Bros. can also learn special abilities that can use on the overworld and battle abilities from Cork and Cask.

  • After Mario is behind Luigi and uses it, he will do the Luigi Dunk that buries Luigi underground.
  • After Luigi is behind Mario and uses it, he will make Mario into Mini Mario.
  • Use Chopper Bros. and Knockback Bros. in battle.

Additionally Mario and Luigi can do more damage in battle when the player hits the button when the hammer shakes.

There would be two Hammers given to Baby Mario and Baby Luigi in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time by the L33t Hamm3r Broz.. They could be used to tunnel underground and to hit switches. During battle, Baby Mario and Baby Luigi can use their Hammers to attacks enemies. The Hammers could not be upgraded in this game.

The action command would remain the same in this game where the player can press the button when the hammer shakes. When the babies battle with the Mario Bros., the adult bros. can press their button to lift up the baby.

Mario & Luigi would find the Hammers early in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story in the Trash Pit. Luigi can learn how to turn Mario into Mini Mario by using the hammer in Pump Works. They would be used different in battle where the Mario Bros. will have to press the button at the very last moment and if done right, it will give the player an "Excellent".

The Hammers are set to return in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team.
