[edit] Character Bio
[edit] Early History
Yoshi (also referred to as Green Yoshi to distinguish from other Yoshis) is a dinosaur who makes appearances in many Mario games. He gained popularity after starring in Super Mario World for the SNES as a means of transport for Mario. It was also the game he made his debut in. He later started playing the main role in several platform games like Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. In which he, along with the other Yoshis, helped Mario, and his friends find their homes when they were babies.
[edit] Appearance and Personality
Yoshi is a green dinosaur, with white cheeks, and a white stomach. He has red spikes running on his back to his red shell with a white border. He wears brown shoes that have a yellow border near the bottom. His eyes have sockets sticking slightly above his large round nose. Yoshi is kind, gentle, and warm, though he can get nasty if called for from enemies.
The name Yoshi also refers to a whole species, with a similar appearance to the Green Yoshi and they come in different colors, including, but not limited to red, orange, blue, purple and black.

[edit] Super Mario Series
[edit] Super Mario World
During the events of Super Mario World, Bowser launches an assault on Dinosaur Land. In this game, Yoshi will appear in four colors, Yoshi(who is green), Blue Yoshi, Red Yoshi and Yellow Yoshi. In order for Bowser to eliminate the Yoshis, he would encase them in Yoshi Eggs and give them to his children, the Koopalings, to look over. Yoshi would also be trapped in an egg and could be found in a block in the field on Yoshi's Island.
The Mario Bros., alongside Princess Peach would be vacationing on Dinosaur Island when Bowser attacks. The Mario Bros. would be napping on the beach when Bowser's forces would kidnap Princess Peach. The plumbers would go in search for Peach before coming across Yoshi's egg and they would free him from his prison. When released, Yoshi would tell them of what is happening and all three would set out to rescue the imprisoned Yoshis and save the Princess.
Yoshi would be a quick and powerful form of transportation for the Mario Bros. He could use his tongue to eat most types of enemies, including those that cannot be defeated by Mario or Luigi. When he is hit, he will run away and the Mario Bros. will need to jump back on to calm him down. Yoshi is not able to enter Ghost Houses, Fortresses, or any of the castles that contain the Koopalings, or Bowser himself. Yoshi will wait patiently outside of them while the Mario Bros. take on the level.
When the Koopalings and Bowser have been defeated and the seven Yoshi Eggs and Princess Toadstool have been rescued, they all will return to Yoshi's House to celebrate their victory. During the celebrations, all seven of the Yoshi Eggs will hatch into Baby Yoshis and peace would be restored.

In the comic Super Mario Adventures, (Created by Nintendo Power.) Yoshi, along with other Yoshis, appear though they only could say the word "Yoshi", Yoshi decides to help Mario, track down Bowser, (Or King Koopa as he is called in the comics and cartoons.) mostly due to the fact that Yoshis had been disappearing from Yoshi Village. Later Yoshi appeared in the Super Mario World Television Series, his role was minor and his personality was of a child's, much different than it is in the video games. Yoshi also appeared in the Super Mario Bros. Movie, as Bowser's pet, though he looks much different than his usual cute appearance, in the movie.
