World 5 is the fifth world in Super Mario 3D Land. It is a desert-based level with cactuses and mountains in the background of the level. The boss of the world is False Bowser and can be found in the Castle at the end of the level.

World 5-1.

World 5-1 introduces the Boomerang Flower to Super Mario 3D Land. Mario will be able to throw around a Boomerang at other enemies, as well as collecting items like the Star Medal in hard to reach places. Mario will come across two Pokeys after the Boomerang Flower, a good way to test out his new abilities. Climbing up the small hill, he will come across a Boomerang Bros. and some rock platforms that will break away when Mario walks on them. He will come across some Tail Goombas as he crosses a platform to some Tail Thwomps that block Mario from getting to the door. Inside the door, is the Midway Flag that leads to a raise sand platform. While on this platform, Mario will need to avoid Boomerang Bros., sand Blarggs, Spiked Balls, and large Spiked Balls before reaching the top. Mario will need to weave around the Pokeys to reach the Cannon that will shoot him to the Flagpole.

  • Star Medal 1: To the left of the two Pokeys at the start, there will be a small path leading to a pipe full of coins and a Star Medal.
  • Star Medal 2: Above the second Tail Thwomp
  • Star Medal 3: While on the raising sand platform, the Star Medal will appear to the right.

World 5-2.

World 5-2 was designed like a Legend of Zelda game in memory of the 25th Anniversary of the Legend of Zelda series. The player will play from an overhead view as Mario starts in a room with a rectangle Question Block, a Question Block and a hidden Fire Flower. The next room has two Spinies that can be easily avoided before going to the next room with another Spiny and rolling spike bars. In the next room, Mario has the option to go up or right. If he goes right, it will take him to a room with some coins and a room that needs all four torches lit for a little bonus. If he goes up, he will continue on with the level and reach the Midway Flag. He will maneuver around a pit of lava and more Spinies before needing to wait for the moving platforms to cross over a large pit of lava and reach the Mystery Box. After the Mystery Box, Mario will use the platform to get into the next area which contains a long room of rolling spike bars that move quickly. Mario will have to jump quickly to avoid them before getting to the next room that has some fire geysers and Spinies. Once past all of these obstacles, he can enter the door that will lead him to the Flagpole.

  • Star Medal 1: In the spinning spike bar room, at the bottom jump up onto the ledge.
  • Star Medal 2: Going to the room on the right after the spinning spike bar, Mario will need to light all four torches.
  • Star Medal 3: At the end of the room with the rolling spike bars.

For Mario to be able to access this level, he will need to have collected a minimum of 30 Star Medals. This level starts off with Mario on a platform with a Flophopper in front of him. He will next have to jump onto the moving platform and avoid any spike bars that get in his way while transferring to another platform. Next he will have to jump onto a blue swinging platform that takes him to another piece of land with a Flophopper, two Question Blocks(one with a Boomerang Flower) and a Brick Block. He'll move back onto another moving platform that will have a second platform moving beside it. He will need to switch back and forth on this platforms to avoid the obstacles that are in front of him like the spike blocks, Venus Fire Traps or Paragoombas. Mario will arrive at an area with more Flophoppers that will be in the way of the Midway Flag, and after Mario will cross some Donut Lifts before using the swinging blue platforms to continue on with the level. He will be at an area with a pole with the Rainbow Jump Block at the top of it, though he could make it pass the Flophoppers to continue with the level and go to another segment with moving platforms while avoiding the obstacles. Finally he will make it to another blue swing platform that he can use to touch the top of the Flagpole.

  • Star Medal 1: After the Midway, the Star Medal is on a platform above the swing platform.
  • Star Medal 2: At the end of Coin Heaven.
  • Star Medal 3: After the Coin Heaven, Mario will go on two moving platforms, staying on the left will take him to the last Star Medal.

Taking place underground, World 5-4 is the first appearance of Monty Moles and Mega Moles in the game. Mario will start off by dropping into the level and in front of a Mega Mole. He will have to carefully make it around Mega Moles who will try and get in his way. He is able to go through different paths that will lead him to the same area but will allow him to grab Star Medals or avoid the Mega or Monty Moles. He can also receive a power-up if he goes a certain way and find some Brick Blocks. Once out of the caves, he will reach the Midway Flag and have to dropped down the big hole that leads to an area with water, Monty Moles, and a Rocky Wrench sitting in a Warp Pipe. Mario will traverse back into the caves after avoiding Mega Moles and Monty Moles before reaching five Warp Pipes. Only one of these Warp Pipes lead Mario out of the cave, while the others warp him out of another of these pipes. If Mario uses the correct one, it will take him to the end of the level and the Flagpole.

  • Star Medal 1: Near the start of the level, there can be invisible blocks found near a Monty Mole. This will lead Mario to the Star Medal.
  • Star Medal 2: Located near the first Star Medal, stay near the top to reach it.
  • Star Medal 3: After three Mega Moles, head right through the low areas to reach the Star Medal.

Jumping right into World 5-5, Mario encounters a Grand Tail Goomba and two Question Blocks, one containing the Propeller Block that will be needed throughout this level. Mario will use the Propeller Block to jump from cloud to land to cloud again before making it to a stack of Goombas beside three Question Blocks, with one holding another Propeller Block. Moving on, he will use the trampoline box to reach the high land where a Tail Grand Goomba is waiting beside a Star Medal and a rectangle Question Block. The next area, Mario will have to use the Propeller Block carefully to jump from one cloud to another as the clouds will move back and forth. Once past that, he will make it to the Midway Flag and Binoculars, which will reveal a Toad making his way down to the Flagpole. He will then use the trampoline boxes again to make it to another section with Tail Grand Goombas before making his long descent down towards the Flagpole. The player can choose to collect the Star Medal, Red Ring or P-Switch on the way down or just keep going until they reach the Flagpole.

  • Star Medal 2: After the Midway Flag, the Star Medal is inbetween three Trampolin Boxes
  • Star Medal 3: Making your way towards the Flagpole, the Star Medal will be to the right.

For Mario to access the final castle of World 5, he will need 50 Star Medals to do so. Starting off the level, Mario will immediately meet up with a Dry Bones, alongside some Brick Blocks and a Question Block. He will next need to jump onto moving platforms that will disappear into lava after time, while avoiding some swing spikes and a Bowser box containing Dry Bones. The next area will have Draglets, Brick Blocks, and three Thwomps that Mario has to carefully avoid before having to cross over lava with moving platforms with Dry Bones popping out of Bowser boxes and a Red Ring that gives out a power-up before the Midway Flag. A pair of Binoculars are also present, they will show off the rest of the level, and the two Toads being held prisoner by [[Bowser]. Next, he will have to use the platforms on the left to make it past the Thwomps before encountering one Hammer Bro. before making his way to the next Bowser fight.

Like the first castle, Bowser will shoot fireballs at Mario while he tries to make it closer on the moving platforms. These platforms, much like the earlier ones in the level, will disappear into the lava after reaching a certain point. Once past this, Mario can make it to the bridge with Bowser on and carefully avoid him to reach the Bowser switch that destroys the bride and reveal that this was a Magikoopa, disguised as a False Bowser. The door to the right will open as Mario rescues the two Toads and will take the Warp Box, up to the Flagpole to complete the level.
