Whomp is typically a medium sized to huge stone enemy in the Mario series of games. He resembles a very thick wall with legs, arms, and a face. His goal in all game appearances except for one or two is to fall face first onto Mario and crush him. Whomps are seen wearing bandages on their backs which are typically cracked up from all the falling they do. Throughout the games they come in many different sizes from tiny to huge.
 Super Mario Series
Whomp makes his first appearance in Super Mario 64 where he is a rather large enemy found in only a few levels. His most common appearance is in Whomp's Fortress where two are encountered close to the top of the fortress. In this game he walks around rather slowly in the path of Mario, and is rather easy to avoid. He attacks by first seeing Mario when he faces him and then attempting to give chase. If Mario gets close enough and is standing directly in front of him he will fall face first in an effort to crush him. If Mario gets crushed he will lose health.
Whomp will again appear in the remake of Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo DS, where his appearances and roles are exactly the same. In this game however Whomp takes on a more modern appearance, and looks more similar to his present day appearance. He can be defeated in both games by ground pounding him with Mario after he falls.
Whomp will make his first appearance in a 2D game in New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS. Here he looks exactly as he does in Super Mario 64 DS and behaves the same way as in both previous games. He appears in two sizes in this game being the normal or medium size, and a big size. When he is first seen he will be walking back and forth until he sees Mario, and then will attempt to drop on him. Players must run by quickly to get out of the way or jump over him. After he is on the ground players can ground pound him to defeat him as in previous games. He can also be defeated with Mega Mario after using a Mega Mushroom.
Huge Whomps appear in Super Mario Galaxy 2 where they are encountered on the way to fighting Bowser. The level Whomp's Fortress comes back in this game from Super Mario 64 and a huge Whomp is also encountered here. Also when players fight the Whomp King he summons tiny Whomps as an obstacle. In this game they can be defeated in the same manor with a single ground pound defeating them after they fall.
Whomps make their second 2D appearance in New Super Mario Bros. 2 for the Nintendo 3DS. His general roles are the same as in New Super Mario Bros. except he doesn't walk around, he just stays put waiting for Mario. Once players walk or jump in front of him he will fall, and can be defeated with a simple ground pound. When they are defeated, they will drop two coins. Like it's predecessor he appears in two different sizes being normal sized and big.
At least one Whomp is set to appear in the upcoming game Paper Mario: Sticker Star.
Whomp has made numerous appearances throughout the Mario Party Series of games, appearing in both boards and mini-games.
Whomps would appear in the very first Mario Party for the Nintendo 64. Here they can be encountered in the one board DK's Jungle Adventure where they block certain pathways. Players have to pay them ten coins to pass.
