Latest Appearance Mario Kart 7
Effect Temporally gives invincibility to the user [1], allows user to defeat any* enemy (such as Chain Chomp [2] or destroy Boos).

This article about the star is not to be confused with the Power Star.

The Star also known as Super Stars, Starman, Rainbow Star [3] and Invincibility Stars is the ultimate power up in most of the Mario Games. In the main games, a super star grants invincibility for around 20-30 seconds. This will prevent Mario from being hurt by all enemies and being able to destroy most of them, except falling into lava or deep water, falling down a hole in a level etc.

[edit] Mario Kart

In the Mario Kart series, Super Stars can be found in Item Blocks and when used give Mario a bit more Speed, allow him to drive off-road full-speed, have full invincibility (can't be hit by lightning etc, but can still fall into lava), knock players out of the way and in Mario Kart Wii's battle mode, coins or extra balloons will be caught when hitting another driver when under the power of a Star. Stars can also be left on the track (If you are hit by lightning etc) for other players to pick up.

[edit] New Super Mario Bros.

In New Super Mario Brothers (DS) and New Super Mario Brothers Wii power stars fall out of Blocks rarely and bounce about, a bit like in the original Super Mario Bros. Games. In the Wii edition there are blocks sometimes called Star-to-Coin blocks that when hit with Super Star power on Mario, another star comes out, however if you don't have a super star on then it will just be a single coin. Stars also light up dark areas such as World 2-3 in NSMBWii.

[edit] Super Mario 3D Land

Stars would return in Super Mario 3D Land and serve the same function as they do in other Mario platformer games.

[edit] Mario Tennis Open

The Star would appear as one of the five Chance Shots in Mario Tennis Open. The icon for this chance shot would be purple and when it is used, the character will perform a shot similar to the Smash Shot but much stronger. It can be activated by pressing the X or Y buttons.

Players can also purchase a tennis racket for 4,000 coins, uniform for 1,350 coins, wristbands for 700 coins and shoes for 900 coins. These items can be randomly unlocked after playing a match and used for the players Mii.

[edit] One-up trick

In levels, if you hit enemies without interruption you should get 200 points, then 400, then 600, 800, 1000, 2000, 4000, 6000, 8000 and then a 1-Up. In NSMBWii there is several Hint Videos showing you how to get one-ups using stars and this method. The first example is in world 1-2.
