Spike is a medium sized enemy found in the Mario Series of games and is a member of the Koopa family. He is always green with a small black shell, and blue flame hair. In all games he appears in he throws large spiked balls at Mario hence his name. One curious thing about him is that he regurgitates the balls. He is not to be confused with his relative the Snow Spike who throws snow balls instead of spiked balls, or the Stone Spike who is blue.

Spike first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3 where he appears in two levels. Like mentioned he attacks by regurgitating spiked balls and throwing them in the path of Mario, or Luigi. In this game it is possible to jump on his head to defeat him even while he is holding a ball above it. He also can be defeated by using Power Ups or a Koopa Shell.

Spikes appear again in New Super Mario Bros. Wii in World 2. They behave exactly as they do in Super Mario Bros. 3 except they stand in place throwing balls, while in the first they walk around. In this game he cannot be jumped on while holding a ball above his head, and if players try they will take damage. He can be defeated using Power Ups such as the Fire Flower or Ice Flower.
