Red Shells are red Koopa Troopa shell that would first appear in Super Mario Bros. It would not be used as an item in the first game, as it would be worn by the Koopa Troopas. These Koopa Troopas won't fall off the cliff like the green shell Koopa Troopas, but instead turn around when they reach a ledge.

Red Shells in the Mario Kart series will home in on the opponent that is one rank higher than the player using the Red Shell. Unlike the Green Shells that just shoot straight. Triple Red Shells would appear in Mario Kart 64, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Mario Kart DS, Mario Kart Wii, and Mario Kart 7. They will help create a barrier as they circulate around the racer. In Mario Kart: Super Circuit, a single Red Shell can be laid on the track and act as a mine. In Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, the Red Shells would be special items for Koopa Troopa, Paratroopa, Petey Piranha, and King Boo. They would also be carried by the thrower in this game instead of having the circle the kart.

The player can unlock tennis gear for their Mii character in Mario Tennis Open. Players can purchase a tennis racket for 1,600 coins, a uniform for 1,100 coins, wristbands for 800 coins and shoes for 850 coins after the randomly appear after a match.
