Raccoon Mario is a transformation that would first appear in Super Mario Bros. 3 where Mario or Luigi could need the Super Leaf to transform into Raccoon Mario. While in this form, he will be able to slowly glide down while he falls with the use of his tail. Mario can also attack by spinning his tail and fly high into the air if he runs for a small period of time before jumping. If a P-Wing is used, it will also turn Mario into Raccoon Mario but also allow him to fly indefinitely without having to get a running start. If Mario takes a hit while using the P-Wing, he will transform into Fire Mario, Frog Mario, or Hammer Mario, or clears a level.

The Tanooki Suit would be a related form where Mario can not only fly, but also turn into Statue Mario as well. The full Tanooki form would appear in Super Mario 3D Land where the Super Leaf would be required for the transformation. Enemies in this game would also be able to turn into "Raccoon" variations though Raccoon Mario does not appear in the game. Raccoon Mario was suppose to appear in Super Mario World but was replaced by a similar form. There would be a trophy of Raccoon Mario into Super Smash Bros. Melee. It will also be appearing in the upcoming Nintendo 3DS game, New Super Mario Bros. 2. Raccoon Luigi would have ears and a tail similar to Tanooki Luigi in Super Mario 3D Land.

Both Toad and Princess Toadstool could turn into Raccoon Toad and Raccoon Toadstool in The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 when they use a Super Leaf. During the episode of Super Koopa, Bowser would use a Power Pendant to become Raccoon Koopa.

Mario would turn into Raccoon Mario once in the Nintendo Comics System, in the story "It's Always Fair Weather", where would gain the ability from a piece of a planet labeled "Magic Leaf Raccoonias" for a toothpick. He would be able to save some hot-air balloonists trapped in a cyclone that was created by Bowser.

It would return in New Super Mario Bros. 2 with the same function as it did in Super Mario Bros. 3. The only difference is when Luigi collects the Super Leaf, it will give him honey-colored ears and a different tail that resembles more a fox. An invincible form called White Raccoon Mario would appear in this game.
