[edit] Story

Mario, Luigi, Yellow Toad, Blue Toad, and Peach are gathered inside Peach's Castle, where all of a sudden, Bowser and his Koopalings airships appear over the castle. Bowser's airship, with a large mechanical hand, slams inside the castle, grabs Mario, Luigi, and the two Toads, and tosses them away from Peach's Castle and into the Acorn Plains. Mario and the gang look to see that Bowser is taking over the castle, so it's up to them to journey and make their way back to Peach's Castle to defeat Bowser and save Princess Peach.

[edit] Gameplay

New Super Mario Bros U plays similar to previous titles in this subseries and this particular title is heavily influenced from Super Mario World, in terms of design and returning features. Four player co-op, originally introduced in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, makes a return. It also introduces a new character: your Mii, which is an avatar of yourself that is built on the Nintendo Wii U, and is fully playable in the same style that the pre-programmed characters are. Instead of the Worlds remaining seperated like previous titles, the Worlds in this game are inter-connected into one large World Map.

Two new modes introduced in this game are Challenge Mode and Boost Rush Mode.

A new feature focused on the Wii U Gamepad is the inclusion of Boost Mode, which allows a fifth player to create temporary blocks assisting or hindering the other four players, by tapping the Gamepad screen.

[edit] Power-ups

This game features two new power-ups: Super Acorn, which transform the player into a Flying Squirrel suit, giving the player the ability to glide, perform an extra jump while gliding, and temporarily clinging to walls. The P-Acorn, is similar to the Super Acorn suit, but with the addition of inifinite jumps while gliding, which allow you to stay in the air indefinitely.

The following Power-ups return:

Throughout your main adventure, you are only limited to ten items in your inventory.

[edit] Yoshi

Yoshi returns and functions similarly to New Super Mario Bros Wii and previous Mario titles, performing a flutter jump and the ability to eat enemies. Baby Yoshis, which originally, and only appeared in Super Mario World, makes a return in this game. They can't be ridden like a normal Yoshi and they immediately eat enemies just by running into them. There are 3 colored Baby Yoshi's, each with an unique ability.

  • Blue Baby Yoshi - This Yoshi spits out Bubbles, turning any enemy it touches into coins or a power-up.
  • Red Baby Yoshi - This Yoshi inflates like a balloon, allowing you to reach higher places.
  • Yellow Baby Yoshi - This Yoshi illuminates dark areas and briefly stuns enemies.
