Story

From Amercian website:

Trouble always seems to find its way to the Mushroom Kingdom! Just as Mario and Luigi go off on a coin hunt in the sky, their beloved Princess Peach is kidnapped by the dastardly Koopalings. The brothers have to venture through over 80 stages to rescue her, grabbing an endless deluge of coins across land, water, air, and snow along the way.

GamePlay

New Super Mario Bros. 2 will be all about coin collecting. With the story mode of the game, the player will be assigned a coin counter with a goal of a million total coins to collect altogether. This is different from previous games where if Mario collects 100 coins, they will earn a 1-Up and the counter will reset back to zero. When Mario hits 100 coins in this game, they will gain a new life but the coin counter will continue to go up throughout the whole game. When you finally hit 1,000,000 coins, something special will happen.

This game will feature a "Bros" experience. This allows the player to team up with a buddy for a two-player co-op as Mario and Luigi. This is different from New Super Mario Bros. as this was only possible in Battle Mode. The entire main campaign will be available for two players. If the second player scrolls off screen, they will float around in a bubble until first player pops it. Similar to what was seen in New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

There would be a new mode called Coin Rush. In Coin Rush, there will be three levels that you've previously completed in the main campaign and your goal is to run through them as fast as you can, while collecting as many coins possible. These levels will have small alterations to them in this mode, as special items like the Golden Mushrroms are worth 50 bonus coins will be placed through the level. At the end of the level, the time left on the game clock will be converted into bonus coins. Mario will only have one life in this mode. When the player completes all three levels in a row without dying, the Coin Rush total will be saved as Streetpass data. When the player passes by a friend, they will see the total that you were able to achieve and have the option to play the same three levels and challenge the players record.
