The Life Shroom was first introduced in Paper Mario and would appear throughout the series. When Mario (or his partner in The Thousand-Year Door) faint in battle, the Life Shroom will automatically activate and revive the character and give then ten HP. If both Mario and his partner faint at the same time, then only one Life Shroom will be used to revive them both.

It would be first seen in Paper Mario after the second Star Spirit is saved by Mario. It can be found in the library of Peach's Castle at the top behind the railing that Princess Peach cannot reach so it is later attained by Mario when he makes it to the castle. It can be bought in Boo's Mansion at Igor's shop before it would latter appear in ? Blocks and the shop in Star Haven. It is also the second item Mario can get from Rip Cheato and it can be left by the orange with white spot Li'l Oinks.

It could be purchased at the Twilight Shop in Twilight Town for forty coins and at Westside Goods in Rogueport for fifty coins in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. Mario could also find on in Hooktail Castle, Twilight Trail and the Palace of Shadow. They are given as prizes in the shops when the reach two hundred points and they could be later found in ? Blocks. Occasionally an enemy will drop one in battle though if the enemy faints in battle, then the Life Shroom will revive it.

They returned in Super Paper Mario but would only restore five HP when Mario, Peach, Bowser, or Luigi fainted.
