Item Boxes are boxes that first appeared in the Mario Kart series starting with Mario Kart 64. They would look similar to that of the ? Block but are transparent and usually multicolored. When a player passes through the box, they will receive a random item from it though some items can only be obtained depending on the players place in the race. They would make appearances in Mario Tennis and Mario Power Tennis. Fake Item Boxes would also appear as an item that can be picked up by the item boxes and are used similar to the Banana item.

[edit] Game History

[edit] Mario Kart series

[edit] Mario Kart 64

Mario Kart 64

Mario Kart 64 would be the first game in the Mario series to introduce the Item Boxes. They would replace the ? Panels from Super Mario Kart. When a player races through it, they will receive a random item and depending on their place in the race, will depend on what kind of item they will get. If the player is in a lower ranking, they will get a stronger item. Unlike the ? Panels, the Item Boxes will regenerate after a short period of time.

[edit] Mario Kart Super Circuit

Mario Kart: Super Circuit

They would return in Mario Kart: Super Circuit with a new appearance. Here they would look like a cube that changes colors unlike the diamond appearance in Mario Kart 64. They could be found in groups of 3,4,5, though some can be found in hidden locations on the tracks.

[edit] Mario Kart: Double Dash!!

Double Item Box

A new Item Box would be introduced in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! called the Double Item Boxes. This would be their only appearance in the Mario series so far. They will allow the driver and the thrower items. During the battle game, Bob-omb Blast, they will only allow players the Bob-omb item. They will remain stationary or occasionally move along the track on certain tracks like Mushroom Bridge. They can also move back and forth from left to right, as seen on levels like Peach Beach, and Dino Dino Jungle.

[edit] Mario Kart DS

The appearance of the item box would remain the same as they did from Mario Kart Double Dash!! in Mario Kart DS. They would use the same function as they did in previous games. During Mission Mode, the task of the player will occasionally be destroying a certain amount of Item Boxes.

On DK Pass, an item box can be found on top of a large hill that will give a player a Star, Red Shell, Triple Mushroom or Mushroom no matter their placing in the race.

[edit] Mario Kart Wii

Mario Kart Wii.

Mario Kart Wii would see the Item Box lose the checkerboard textures and gain rainbow dot textures. Nothing has been changed to the items function from previous games except they will regenerate slower in this game.

In Grand-Prix, Vs. and WFC modes, a lot of the Item Boxes will appear without a spinning question mark, while in offline multplayer, they will move like a spin.

[edit] Mario Kart Arcade GP 2

They would appear in Mario Kart Arcade GP 2 with the same function as the other Mario Kart games. They could be found in hordes in most places.

[edit] Mario Kart 7

Item Boxes would return in Mario Kart 7 with the same function as they did in previous Mario Kart games. Their appearance would look similar to that in Mario Kart Wii except with a rainbow color. Some Item Boxes would remain stationary, while some will move around the track.

[edit] Super Smash Bros. series

One Item Box would appear in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, as a sticker. They would increase ice attacks by eight.

[edit] Mario Tennis series

The Item Boxes would appear in Mario Tennis and Mario Power Tennis. In just Mario Tennis, they would only be used for a certain stage but use the same function as they do in the Mario Kart Series. The player will need to hit the item box by hitting it with a tennis ball.

[edit] Mario & Sonic series

[edit] Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games

Found in the Dream Race and Dream Platform on the Wii version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, item boxes can be found and give players an item when touched.

[edit] Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games

In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games in the dream events, item boxes could be used for giving players items when they run into the boxes. The Item Roulette can't be used to stop early like in the Mario Kart games and items don't matter on the placing of the player.
