False Bowsers first appeared in Super Mario Bros.. They would be found in seven of the eight castles in the game as Mario would have to fight them before he would reach Bowser's Castle and fight the real Bowser. If Mario was Fire Mario, he would be able to shoot a fireball at the False Bowser and reveal that it was just a common enemy dressed as the king with a spell. They are light gray enemies(to distinguish from the black background) and their attributes would be:
- World 1: Goomba - fire
- World 2: Green Koopa Troopa - fire
- World 3: Buzzy Beetle - fire
- World 4: Spiny - fire
- World 5: Lakitu - fire
- World 6: Blooper - hammer
- World 7: Hammer Brother - hammer
- World 8 (Lost Levels): Bowser - hammer and fire
Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels] additional worlds:
- World 9: Bowser - hammer and fire (FDS) / Bowser - hammer (SNES)
- World A: Goomba - fire (FDS) / Red Koopa Troopa - hammer (SNES)
- World B: Koopa Troopa - fire (FDS) / Green Cheep-Cheep - hammer (SNES)
- World C: Buzzy Beetle - fire (FDS) / Bullet Bill - hammer (SNES)
- World D: Spiny - fire (FDS) / Bowser - hammer (SNES)
In The Lost Levels, False Bowsers would appear in Worlds 8-4, 9-3 and D-4, alongside Bowser. These Bowsers would have a mint-green body with a brown muzzle instead of the real color and would be magical copies of the real Bowser. They could breath fire and throw hammers in all levels found except World D-4, where a Spiny would breath fire.
They would lack alternate coloration in Super Mario All-Stars and look just like Bowser. Bowser would only appear in World 9. The False Bowsers could be distinguished by how the music plays on the level, as the real Bowser music would be different. All False Bowsers in 9-D would throw hammers in the Super Mario All-Stars remake and the real Bowser would throw hammers in World D-4.
They would appear in Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 on the e-world level "Classic World 1-4", This would be the classic level that was seen in Super Mario Bros. and the False Bowser would be a Goomba.
A False Bowser would make an appearance in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. It is found in a special area of Bowser's Castle that is a side-scrolling level that imitates the original level. It would appear at the end of the level but be made of cardboard and Mario can just run underneath him and touch the Ax to make him fall.
False Bowsers appear in the upcoming Nintendo 3DS game, Super Mario 3D Land. They have raccoon tails similar to Tanooki Mario and will attack similar to that in Super Mario Bros., breathing fireballs from a far and jumping.
False Bowser would only appear in World 1-Castle and then again in World 5-Castle. Once they have been defeated, their true forms are shown. The first False Bowser is a Goomba, while the other is a Magikoopa. They will bounce in the lava a couple of times before revealing their true form with a Super Leaf beside them.
