Exclamation Mark Blocks(or ! Block) are blocks that are first seen in Super Mario World. They will first appear as Dotted Line Blocks that only turn solid after Mario or Luigi hit one of the ! Switches at the Switch Palaces. They will also contain various power-ups. The Yellow Blocks contain a Super Mushroom, and the green block contains a Cape Feather. The red and blue blocks do not contain any power-ups and are just used for platforms.
In Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Island DS, Dotted Line Blocks become solid blocks for a short period of time after the player hits a nearby ! Switch. It will allow Yoshi and the baby riding him to use it as a platform.
Exclamation Mark Blocks would come in four different colors in Super Mario 64. Yellow Blocks would contain Coins, Power Stars, 1-Up Mushrooms, or Koopa Shells. Red Blocks would contain the Wing Cap, Blue blocks contain the Vanish Cap, and the green block would contain the Metal Cap. All ! Blocks(except the yellow Blocks), will have to be activated after hitting the ! Switch. In Super Mario 64 DS, they are replaced by red ? Blocks. Special powers would be based on the character hitting the block. If Mario hits a block, he will get the Wing Cap or become inflated. Luigi will become invisible, Wario will become metal, and Yoshi will breath fire.
They would appear in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. They would have a few functions and could activate events. Purple Blocks would be first introduced in these games. Three Blocks would appear in Partners in Time and are used to create three Giant Exclamation Blocks on Yoshi's Island to allow Mario to get further down the volcano. A Blue block would appear in the Star Shrine that would change colors depending on who hits it.
They would appear in the mini-game Key-pa Way in Mario Party. It would be a purple Exclamation Mark Block for the mini-game. One red Exclamation Block would appear in the Murhroom Bank after being bought in the Mushroom Shop.
