These cannons will shoot cannonballs diagonally and are found on floors or ceilings and will continue to fire even if they have been touched. There are also rotating versions of cannons in the game that can fire in two different directions at a time before rotating at a 45° angle. They will also sometime eject Bob-ombs from a short distance.

[edit] Super Mario 64/Super Mario 64 DS

Cannon from Super Mario 64.

Cannons would return in Super Mario 64 and its remake Super Mario 64 DS. In this game, they would be able to aid the player as they could be found in each level of these two games. They can be found under control of the Bob-omb Buddies. Each Bob-omb Buddy will need to be located before a cannon can be activated for that particular level. Cannons will remain covered a metal hatch with a picture of a Bob-omb Buddy on it until the player has talked to the Bob-omb Buddy. It will become difficult on each level to locate the Bob-omb Buddy as Mario progresses in the game. When Mario has talked to the Bob-omb Buddy, all cannons in that level will be opened.

Once unlocked, the metal hatch will slide away to reveal a hole in a ground. To use the cannon, Mario will have to drop down into the hole and the cannon will rise out of the hole. Mario will be able to reach unreachable areas after being fired. The player should aim slightly higher than the area as Mario's trajectory will gradually decrease after he is fired. If the player uses the Wing Cap before entering the cannon, they can fly around as Wing Mario immediately without having to use the Triple Jump to take off.

There is a cannon outside of Princess Peach's Castle, though it is covered by a small metal grate. It can only be unlocked after Mario has collected all 120 Power Stars in the game. The player can use the cannon to get on the roof of the castle, where Yoshi is found and a hidden Wing Cap. In the DS remake, Luigi can capture a green mini-game rabbit on the roof.

The first cannon found in the game is on the upper west area of Delfino Plaza. A Pianta mechanic is working inside of it the first time Mario comes across it and cannot use the cannon at the time. It is accessible after Shadow Mario kidnaps Princess Peach and takes her to Pinna Island. He will be able to use it to shoot to Pinna Island and pursue Shadow Mario. It is Mario's only way to Pinna Park and he will be shot to it every time he enters the cannon.

Mario will come across the second cannon near the entrance of Pinna Park. It will be under control by a Monty Mole and Mario will need to defeat the mole in order to use it. Mario can enter the cannon to complete a secret level and return Delfino Plaza. He can also use the Bullet Bills as a chance to collect many Blue Coins.

The final cannon can be found in Noki Bay in the Uncork the Waterfall level.
